Pantone ‘Colour of the Year’ is looking bright!

Pantone fans have been eagerly awaiting for the Pantone ‘Colour of the Year’ to be revealed for 2021. With black and white photography hints posted onto their social media, some creatives had a bit of fun suggesting it might be ’50 Shades of Grey’. Some were even hoping that it would be white to honour the health care staff for this disastrous year.

The suspense and anticipation is over with Pantone finally revealing their annual ‘Colour of the Year’ or rather, ‘Colours’, unleashing two colours for 2021 – Ultimate Gray (17-5104) and Illuminating (13-0647).

You might be thinking why these colours were chosen for 2021? As Pantone put it, “People look for ways to fortify themselves with energy, clarity, and hope to overcome the continuing uncertainty, spirted and emboldening shades to satisfy our quest for vitality”. The two independent colours “come together to support one another. It is a story of colour that encapsulates deeper feelings of thoughtfulness with the promise of something sunny and friendly’, Pantone stated.

Illuminating has us thinking that this is going to be a brighter and better year – a cheerful yellow that sparkles with vivacity. An uplifting and strong colour choice that reflects a hot summer day or a fresh start.

PANTONE 17-5104 Ultimate Gray

Ultimate Gray, “the colours of pebbles on the beach and natural elements whose weathered appearance highlights an ability to stand the test of time”. It is a solid and dependable choice of colour.

These colours combined project a message of positivity. According to Leatrice Eiseman, Pantone’s Executive Director, “Practical and rock solid but at the same time warming and optimistic, this is a colour combination that gives us resilience and hope. We need to feel encouraged and uplifted; this is essential to the human spirit”.
